  • The Equine IL-1β (Interleukin-1 Beta) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of equine IL-1β in cell culture supernatants. With minor modifications to the assay procedure, this ELISA may also be used to measure IL-1β in additional biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, synovial fluid, and tissue homogenates or lysates, depending on the experimental model and physiological context. This flexibility supports a wide range of immunology and translational research applications. Reported measurements: Equine IL-1β has been detected in serum (~30-500 pg/mL), plasma (~25-450 pg/mL), synovial fluid (~60-700 pg/mL), and PBMC culture supernatants (~100-1200 pg/mL under stimulation conditions), although levels vary depending on immune activation, infection, or experimental treatment. Interleukin-1 Beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine primarily produced by activated monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It plays a central role in initiating and amplifying inflammatory responses, fever induction, leukocyte recruitment, and immune system activation. Measurement of IL-1β is widely used to assess inflammatory signaling, immune activation, and disease progression in horses and related species. IL-1β serves as an important biomarker of acute inflammation, immune response, and tissue pathology, supporting studies in equine immunology, comparative immunology, and translational research. Why measure Equine IL-1β: Measuring IL-1β provides valuable insight into proinflammatory signaling, innate immune responses, and immune system activation. Quantifying IL-1β helps evaluate disease progression, infection response, vaccine efficacy, and immunomodulatory treatments, making it a key tool for both fundamental and applied equine immunology research. IL-1β is a member of the IL-1 cytokine family, which also includes IL-1α and IL-18, all contributing to immune regulation, inflammation, and host defense. The kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant protein standard for assay development. These antibodies have been validated to function together in an ELISA format using the provided standard. Optimal buffers, antibody concentrations, incubation times, temperatures, and assay conditions have not been predetermined, allowing researchers to optimize assay sensitivity and dynamic range based on their specific sample type and experimental requirements. The quantities of kit components are not matched, and individual components may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only and is manufactured in the USA.

Equine Interleukin-1 Beta (IL-1β) is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine produced primarily by activated macrophages, monocytes, dendritic cells, and synoviocytes in horses (Equus caballus) in response to infection, tissue injury, or inflammatory stimuli. Synthesized as an inactive precursor (pro–IL-1β), it is cleaved into its active form by caspase-1 within the inflammasome complex and signals through the IL-1 receptor (IL-1R1), activating NF-κB and MAPK pathways that promote fever, leukocyte recruitment, endothelial activation, and acute-phase protein production. In equine health, IL-1β plays a central role in inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, laminitis, colitis, endotoxemia, equine asthma (recurrent airway obstruction), and bacterial infections, where excessive IL-1β production contributes to joint degradation, pulmonary inflammation, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), and tissue damage. In joint disease specifically, IL-1β drives cartilage matrix degradation and synovial inflammation, making it a key therapeutic target. As both a biomarker and mediator of inflammation, equine IL-1β is widely studied in veterinary medicine and performance horse management. In translational research, horses serve as valuable large-animal models for human osteoarthritis, sepsis, and inflammatory lung disease, and characterization of equine IL-1β supports studies of inflammasome activation, cytokine-driven pathology, and development of targeted anti-inflammatory and regenerative therapies relevant to both equine and human health.
