  • The Feline IL-1α (Interleukin-1 Alpha) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of IL-1α in cell culture supernatants from cats and can also be used to measure IL-1α in additional biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, and tissue lysates, supporting a wide range of immunology, inflammation, and translational research applications. IL-1α is a pro-inflammatory cytokine primarily produced by activated monocytes, macrophages, and epithelial cells, and it plays a central role in initiating and amplifying inflammatory responses, recruiting immune cells, and regulating cytokine networks. In the feline model, IL-1α is widely studied in the context of infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, cancer, and tissue injury, where its expression reflects the early stages of immune activation and local inflammation. Measurement of IL-1α provides valuable insight into disease progression, immune regulation, and the efficacy of anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory therapies. Reported measurements of feline IL-1α have detected basal serum and plasma levels of approximately 15-120 pg/mL, with elevated levels-often 150-1,200 pg/mL-following infection, immune stimulation, or inflammatory challenge, and measurable expression has also been observed in tissue lysates from inflamed or immune-activated organs. The kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant protein standard for assay development, and these antibodies have been validated to function together in an ELISA format using the provided standard. Optimal buffers, antibody concentrations, incubation times, temperatures, and assay conditions have not been predetermined, allowing researchers to optimize assay sensitivity and dynamic range based on their specific sample type and experimental requirements. The quantities of kit components are not matched, and individual components may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only and is manufactured in the USA.

Feline Interleukin-1 Alpha (IL-1α) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine belonging to the IL-1 family, which includes IL-1α, IL-1β, and the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), and plays a central role in initiating and amplifying innate immune responses in cats (Felis catus). Unlike IL-1β, IL-1α is constitutively expressed in epithelial and other barrier tissues and can function as both a membrane-bound and intracellular alarmin released upon cell injury or necrosis. IL-1α signals through the IL-1 receptor type 1 (IL-1R1), activating NF-κB and MAPK pathways that drive leukocyte recruitment, fever, endothelial activation, and production of additional pro-inflammatory mediators. In feline health, IL-1α is particularly relevant in inflammatory skin diseases, chronic gingivostomatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, respiratory infections, and osteoarthritis, where it contributes to local tissue inflammation and immune cell infiltration. Dysregulated IL-1α signaling may exacerbate chronic inflammatory conditions and tissue damage. As both an early mediator of sterile inflammation and a biomarker of tissue injury, feline IL-1α is important in studies of mucosal immunity, chronic inflammatory disease, and host–pathogen interactions. In translational research, cats serve as valuable spontaneous models for human inflammatory and oral mucosal diseases, and characterization of feline IL-1α supports comparative investigations into cytokine-driven pathology and development of targeted anti-inflammatory therapies relevant to both veterinary and human medicine.
