  • The Canine Oncostatin M (OSM) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of OSM in cell culture supernatants from dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and can also be used to measure OSM in a variety of biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, whole blood, and tissue lysates from organs such as spleen, lymph nodes, liver, and lung. While the kit is optimized for cell culture supernatants, minor modifications to the protocol may be required when measuring OSM in other sample types to ensure optimal sensitivity and accuracy, allowing researchers to adjust buffers, antibody concentrations, incubation times, temperatures, and other assay conditions as needed. OSM is a pleiotropic cytokine primarily produced by activated T lymphocytes, monocytes, and dendritic cells, and it plays a central role in immune regulation, inflammation, hematopoiesis, and tissue remodeling. In the canine animal model, OSM is widely studied in the context of immune-mediated diseases, inflammatory conditions, cancer research, and regenerative medicine, where its expression reflects cytokine-mediated signaling and immune system modulation. Measurement of OSM provides valuable insight into immune activation, cytokine signaling, tissue remodeling, and the efficacy of therapeutic interventions, with reported levels in dogs typically detected at low picogram-per-milliliter concentrations under basal conditions (~20-150 pg/mL in serum or plasma) and increasing to several hundred picograms per milliliter following immune stimulation, inflammation, or tissue injury, depending on sample type and experimental context. The kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant canine OSM protein standard for assay development, and these antibodies have been validated to function together in an ELISA format using the provided standard. The quantities of kit components are not matched, and individual components may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only and is manufactured in the USA.

Canine Oncostatin M (OSM) is a multifunctional cytokine belonging to the IL-6 family of cytokines, which includes IL-6, IL-11, leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 (CLCF1), and IL-27. In dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), OSM signals through receptor complexes containing the shared gp130 subunit, typically pairing with the OSM receptor (OSMR) or leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR), leading to activation of intracellular signaling pathways such as JAK/STAT3, MAPK, and PI3K. Canine OSM is produced primarily by activated T lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils and functions in regulation of inflammation, hematopoiesis, and tissue remodeling. In canine health, OSM-mediated signaling is associated with inflammatory and degenerative conditions including canine osteoarthritis, dermatitis, and chronic inflammatory diseases, where it contributes to regulation of cytokine networks, matrix remodeling, and immune cell activation. OSM has also been implicated in cancer biology, including canine mammary tumors and osteosarcoma, where IL-6 family signaling pathways can influence tumor growth, tumor microenvironment remodeling, and immune responses. As a regulator of inflammation and tissue remodeling, canine OSM is important for studies of immune signaling, inflammatory disease mechanisms, and tumor biology, and contributes to comparative research using dogs as translational models for human inflammatory and musculoskeletal diseases.
