  • The Dolphin IL-13 (Interleukin-13) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of IL-13 in cell culture supernatants from dolphins (Delphinidae) and can also be used to measure IL-13 in a variety of biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, whole blood, and tissue lysates from organs such as spleen, lung, lymph nodes, and liver. While the kit is optimized for cell culture supernatants, minor modifications to the protocol may be required when measuring IL-13 in other sample types to ensure optimal sensitivity and accuracy, allowing researchers to adjust buffers, antibody concentrations, incubation times, temperatures, and other assay conditions as needed. IL-13 is a Th2-type cytokine produced primarily by activated T helper cells, innate lymphoid cells, and mast cells and plays a central role in immune regulation, allergic responses, and mucosal immunity. In the dolphin animal model, IL-13 is widely studied in the context of allergic inflammation, parasite infection, respiratory disease, and immunomodulatory research, where its expression reflects Th2-mediated immune responses. Measurement of IL-13 provides valuable insight into immune activation, cytokine signaling, disease progression, and the efficacy of therapeutic or vaccine interventions, with reported levels in dolphins typically detected at low picogram-per-milliliter concentrations under basal conditions (~10-150 pg/mL in serum or plasma) and increasing during immune challenge, infection, or inflammatory stimulation, depending on sample type and experimental context. The kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant dolphin IL-13 protein standard for assay development, and these antibodies have been validated to function together in an ELISA format using the provided standard. The quantities of kit components are not matched, and individual components may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only and is manufactured in the USA.

Dolphin Interleukin-13 (IL-13) is a Th2-associated cytokine produced primarily by activated CD4⁺ T helper cells and other type 2 immune populations in dolphins, particularly the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), where it plays a role in regulating mucosal immunity, alternative macrophage activation, and tissue remodeling. IL-13 signals through receptor complexes containing IL-13Rα1 and IL-4Rα, activating JAK/STAT6 pathways that modulate gene expression involved in IgE-associated responses, mucus production, suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and promotion of wound healing. In dolphin health, IL-13 may be particularly relevant in responses to parasitic infections, chronic dermatitis, respiratory disease, and tissue repair following injury, where balanced type 2 immune responses help limit tissue damage while supporting recovery. Dysregulated IL-13 expression could contribute to fibrosis or chronic inflammatory conditions, especially in the context of environmental stressors such as pollutant exposure or harmful algal blooms. As dolphins serve as sentinel species for marine ecosystem health, IL-13 represents an important biomarker of Th2 immune polarization and inflammatory regulation in both managed and wild populations. Characterization of dolphin IL-13 supports studies of host–pathogen interactions, immune adaptation to marine environments, and comparative type 2 immune mechanisms relevant to both wildlife conservation and broader mammalian immunology.
