  • The Caprine LIF (Leukemia Inhibitory Factor) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of LIF in cell culture supernatants from goats (Capra hircus) and can also be used to measure LIF in a variety of biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, whole blood, and tissue lysates from organs such as uterus, placenta, liver, spleen, and lung. While the kit is optimized for cell culture supernatants, minor modifications to the protocol may be required when measuring LIF in other sample types to ensure optimal sensitivity and accuracy, allowing researchers to adjust buffers, antibody concentrations, incubation times, temperatures, and other assay conditions as needed. LIF is a pleiotropic cytokine and a member of the IL-6 family of cytokines, produced primarily by stromal cells, macrophages, endothelial cells, and trophoblasts, and plays a central role in stem cell maintenance, hematopoiesis, reproductive biology, tissue regeneration, and immune regulation. In the caprine animal model, LIF is widely investigated in the context of reproductive physiology, stem cell biology, tissue repair, inflammatory responses, and translational veterinary research, where its expression reflects critical signaling pathways in cellular proliferation and differentiation. Measurement of LIF provides valuable insight into cytokine signaling, tissue remodeling, disease progression, and the evaluation of therapeutic or immunomodulatory interventions, with reported levels in goats typically detected at low picogram-per-milliliter concentrations under basal conditions (~10-200 pg/mL in serum or plasma) and increasing during tissue injury, inflammation, reproductive events, or pathophysiological conditions, depending on sample type and experimental context. The kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant caprine LIF protein standard for assay development, and these antibodies have been validated to function together in an ELISA format using the provided standard. The quantities of kit components are not matched, and individual components may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only and is manufactured in the USA.

Caprine Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF) is a multifunctional cytokine belonging to the IL-6 family—which includes IL-6, IL-11, oncostatin M (OSM), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1), cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 (CLCF1), and IL-27—and signals through receptor complexes containing the shared gp130 subunit. In goats (Capra hircus), LIF binds to the LIF receptor (LIFR) in association with gp130, activating JAK/STAT3, MAPK, and PI3K signaling pathways that regulate cell survival, differentiation, immune modulation, and tissue repair. Caprine LIF plays important roles in reproductive biology, particularly in endometrial receptivity, embryo implantation, and early embryonic development, making it highly relevant to fertility management and assisted reproductive technologies in small ruminants. LIF is also involved in hematopoiesis and modulation of inflammatory responses during infections such as caprine arthritis encephalitis (CAE), mastitis, and respiratory disease, where STAT3-driven signaling influences tissue remodeling and immune balance. Dysregulated LIF expression may contribute to fibrosis or tumor progression in certain contexts. As both a reproductive and immunomodulatory cytokine, caprine LIF is important in studies of embryo culture systems, stem cell biology, inflammatory regulation, and cytokine network dynamics. Characterization of caprine LIF supports veterinary research aimed at improving reproductive efficiency, understanding disease pathogenesis, and advancing regenerative and translational applications in small ruminant health.
