  • The Feline IFN-α ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of interferon-alpha (IFN-α) in cell culture supernatants from cats (Felis catus) and can also be used to measure IFN-α in additional biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) culture supernatants, and tissue lysates, with minor protocol modifications recommended to optimize assay performance across different matrices. IFN-α is a type I interferon produced primarily by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, monocytes, and virus-infected cells in response to viral nucleic acids and other pathogen-associated molecular patterns, and it plays a central role in innate antiviral immunity by inducing interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), enhancing antigen presentation, and promoting NK cell and cytotoxic T cell activity. In feline models, IFN-α is particularly relevant in studies of feline viral infections such as feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline coronavirus (including FIP), and other emerging viral pathogens, as well as in vaccine response and antiviral therapeutic research. Measurement of feline IFN-α provides valuable insight into early innate immune activation, antiviral defense mechanisms, and immune modulation, with basal concentrations typically low under healthy conditions and increasing significantly following viral infection, immune stimulation, or cytokine induction depending on experimental design and sample source. The ELISA kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant feline IFN-α protein standard validated to function together in an optimized ELISA format; kit components are not supplied in matched quantities and may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only and is manufactured in the USA.

Feline Interferon-Alpha (IFN-α) is a type I interferon produced primarily by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and virus-infected cells in cats (Felis catus), where it plays a central role in innate antiviral immunity by inducing interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), enhancing antigen presentation, and activating natural killer (NK) cells and adaptive immune responses through the IFNAR receptor complex and JAK/STAT signaling pathways. In feline health, IFN-α is critically involved in host defense against viral infections such as feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline infectious peritonitis (FIP; caused by feline coronavirus), feline herpesvirus, and calicivirus, and recombinant feline IFN-α has been used therapeutically to modulate antiviral and immune responses. Dysregulated or insufficient IFN-α responses can contribute to viral persistence, immunopathology, or chronic inflammation. Importantly, cats serve as valuable natural animal models for human retroviral infections (FIV as a model for HIV), coronavirus-associated immune dysregulation (FIP as a model for severe systemic coronavirus disease), and certain oncogenic viral conditions, making characterization of feline IFN-α highly relevant for understanding antiviral immunity, viral immune evasion, and interferon-based therapeutic strategies in both veterinary and comparative biomedical research.
