  • The Mallard IL-17A (Interleukin-17A) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of IL-17A in mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) cell culture supernatants and can also be used to measure IL-17A in additional biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, intestinal lavage fluid, and tissue lysates, with minor protocol modifications recommended to optimize performance across different matrices. IL-17A is a pro-inflammatory cytokine primarily produced by Th17-like T lymphocytes, γδ T cells, and other innate immune cell populations, where it plays a central role in host defense against extracellular bacteria and fungi by stimulating epithelial and stromal cells to produce chemokines and recruit heterophils and other leukocytes to sites of infection. IL-17A contributes to mucosal immunity, barrier protection, and amplification of inflammatory signaling pathways in avian species. In healthy mallards, circulating IL-17A levels are typically low or near the limit of detection, but concentrations may increase during enteric or respiratory infections, avian influenza virus challenge, bacterial exposure, or vaccine-induced immune activation, depending on disease severity and immune status. Measurement of mallard IL-17A provides valuable insight into Th17-type immune polarization, mucosal inflammatory responses, host-pathogen interactions, and immune modulation in avian immunology and waterfowl disease research. The ELISA kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant mallard IL-17A protein standard validated for use together in an ELISA format; kit components are not supplied in matched quantities and may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only, not for use in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, and is manufactured in the USA.

Mallard IL-17A (Interleukin-17A) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine belonging to the IL-17 family that plays an important role in host defense and inflammatory responses in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). IL-17A is produced primarily by Th17-like CD4⁺ T cells, γδ T cells, and other innate lymphoid populations in response to microbial infection and immune stimulation. It acts on epithelial, endothelial, and stromal cells to induce expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines (including avian IL-8 homologs such as CXCLi1 and CXCLi2), and antimicrobial peptides, thereby promoting heterophil recruitment (the avian functional equivalent of neutrophils) and enhancing mucosal immunity. In healthy mallards, basal IL-17A expression is generally low but increases during bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. Given that mallards are natural reservoir hosts for multiple influenza A virus strains, IL-17A is of particular interest in studies of avian influenza pathogenesis and immune tolerance. Characterization of IL-17A in mallards provides valuable insight into Th17-mediated immune responses, mucosal defense mechanisms, and host–pathogen interactions in wild and domestic waterfowl populations.
