  • The Chicken IL-13 (Interleukin-13) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of IL-13 in chicken (Gallus gallus) cell culture supernatants and can also be used to measure IL-13 in additional biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, intestinal lavage fluid, and tissue lysates, with minor protocol modifications recommended to optimize performance across different matrices. IL-13 is a Th2-associated cytokine produced primarily by activated T helper 2-like lymphocytes and other immune cell populations, where it plays a central role in regulating type 2 immune responses, mucosal immunity, and inflammatory signaling. In avian species, IL-13 contributes to modulation of macrophage activation, regulation of inflammatory cytokine production, and enhancement of barrier defense mechanisms at intestinal and respiratory surfaces. In healthy chickens, circulating IL-13 levels are typically low or near the limit of detection, but concentrations may increase during parasitic infections such as Eimeria spp. (coccidiosis), helminth challenge, allergic-type inflammation, respiratory infections, or vaccine-induced immune activation, depending on immune status and disease severity. Measurement of chicken IL-13 provides valuable insight into Th2-type immune polarization, mucosal immune regulation, host-pathogen interactions, and immune modulation in poultry health and avian immunology research. The ELISA kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant chicken IL-13 protein standard validated for use together in an ELISA format; kit components are not supplied in matched quantities and may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only, not for use in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, and is manufactured in the USA.

Chicken Interleukin-13 (IL-13) is a Th2-associated cytokine produced primarily by CD4⁺ T helper–like cells and other type 2 immune populations in chickens (Gallus gallus), where it plays an important role in regulating mucosal immunity, alternative macrophage activation, and modulation of inflammatory responses. IL-13 signals through receptor components homologous to IL-4Rα and IL-13Rα chains, activating JAK/STAT6-dependent pathways that influence gene expression involved in mucus production, antibody-associated responses, and suppression of excessive pro-inflammatory cytokine signaling. In poultry health, IL-13 is particularly relevant in immune responses to parasitic infections such as Eimeria spp. (coccidiosis) and helminths, where Th2 polarization contributes to parasite control and intestinal tissue repair. IL-13 may also influence immune regulation during viral infections such as avian influenza virus and Newcastle disease virus by shaping the balance between Th1 and Th2 responses. Dysregulated IL-13 expression can contribute to chronic inflammation, impaired pathogen clearance, or altered growth performance. As a biomarker of type 2 immune activation, chicken IL-13 is important in studies of vaccine development, host–parasite interactions, and genetic selection for disease resistance. Characterization of chicken IL-13 supports comparative immunology research into Th2-mediated immunity and cytokine network regulation in avian species.
