  • The Black Flying Fox Bat IL-8 (Interleukin-8, also known as CXCL8) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of IL-8 in cell culture supernatants from Black Flying Fox bats (Pteropus alecto) and can also be used to measure IL-8 in additional biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, and tissue lysates, with minor protocol modifications recommended to optimize performance across different matrices. IL-8 is a pro-inflammatory CXC chemokine produced primarily by monocytes, macrophages, endothelial cells, and epithelial cells in response to inflammatory cytokines, microbial products, and cellular stress, and it functions primarily through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors to recruit and activate neutrophils and other granulocytes at sites of infection or tissue injury. In healthy Black Flying Fox bats, circulating IL-8 levels are typically low or near the limit of detection, but concentrations may increase during viral or bacterial infection, respiratory inflammation, tissue injury, or experimental immune stimulation, depending on pathogen exposure and timing of sampling. In bat immunology and emerging infectious disease research, IL-8 serves as an important biomarker of innate immune activation, neutrophil trafficking, and inflammatory signaling, particularly in studies of zoonotic viruses for which Pteropus species are recognized natural reservoir hosts, including henipaviruses (e.g., Hendra and Nipah viruses). The ELISA kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant Black Flying Fox bat IL-8 protein standard validated for use together in an ELISA format; kit components are not supplied in matched quantities and may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only, not for use in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, and is manufactured in the USA.

Black Flying Fox (Pteropus alecto) Interleukin-8 (IL-8), also known as CXCL8, is a pro-inflammatory chemokine that plays a key role in innate immune responses by mediating neutrophil recruitment, activation, and chemotaxis to sites of infection or tissue injury. As a megabat species recognized as a natural reservoir for several zoonotic viruses—including Hendra virus—P. alecto exhibits unique immune regulatory characteristics, making IL-8 an important molecule for understanding bat host-pathogen interactions. Functionally similar to IL-8 in other mammals, Black Flying Fox IL-8 likely signals through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors to activate downstream pathways involved in leukocyte migration and inflammatory amplification. In this species, regulation of IL-8 is of particular interest because bats often control viral replication without developing excessive inflammatory pathology, suggesting tightly modulated chemokine responses. Characterization of P. alecto IL-8 supports research into mechanisms of immune tolerance, antiviral defense, and inflammation control in reservoir hosts, while also aiding development of species-specific reagents for monitoring immune activation in both field and laboratory studies.
