Ferret CCL2 (C-C motif chemokine ligand 2, also known as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, MCP-1) is a pro-inflammatory chemokine that plays a key role in recruitment and activation of monocytes, macrophages, and memory T cells during immune responses in ferrets (Mustela putorius furo). CCL2 signals primarily through the CCR2 receptor, activating intracellular signaling pathways that promote leukocyte migration, cytokine production, and coordination of innate and adaptive immune responses at sites of infection, inflammation, or tissue injury. In ferret health and research, CCL2 is particularly relevant in respiratory viral infection models, including influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2, where it contributes to recruitment of monocytes and macrophages to the lungs and influences the development of pulmonary inflammation and immune-mediated tissue damage. While CCL2-driven immune cell trafficking supports antiviral defense and tissue repair, excessive or prolonged expression can contribute to cytokine-mediated lung pathology. Because ferrets are widely used as translational models for human respiratory disease and viral transmission, characterization of ferret CCL2 supports studies of chemokine-mediated immune cell recruitment, host–pathogen interactions, and inflammatory mechanisms relevant to human respiratory infections and immune-mediated lung disease.
