Ferret CXCL6 (C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 6), also known as GCP-2 (granulocyte chemotactic protein 2), is a proinflammatory chemokine belonging to the ELR⁺ CXC chemokine family, which includes CXCL1, CXCL2, CXCL3, and CXCL5 that regulate neutrophil recruitment during inflammatory responses. In ferrets (Mustela putorius furo), CXCL6 is produced by macrophages, epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts in response to proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α, microbial infection, or tissue injury. CXCL6 primarily signals through the chemokine receptor CXCR2, which is expressed on neutrophils and other innate immune cells, promoting chemotaxis, activation, and migration of neutrophils to sites of infection or inflammation. In ferret biology, CXCL6 is particularly relevant to respiratory immune responses, as ferrets are widely used as animal models for respiratory viral infections, including influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2. In these models, CXCL6 contributes to neutrophil recruitment and inflammatory signaling within lung tissues, helping regulate the innate immune response to respiratory pathogens. Consequently, ferret CXCL6 is studied in infectious disease and respiratory inflammation research, aiding in the understanding of neutrophil-driven immune responses and host–pathogen interactions in respiratory disease models relevant to human and veterinary medicine.
