Black Flying Fox Bat (Pteropus alecto) CCL3 (C-C motif chemokine ligand 3, also known as MIP-1α, macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha) is a pro-inflammatory chemokine involved in recruitment and activation of immune cells during innate immune responses in bats. CCL3 primarily signals through the CCR1 and CCR5 receptors, promoting chemotaxis of monocytes, macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and T lymphocytes to sites of infection or tissue injury. In P. alecto, a natural reservoir for several zoonotic viruses including Hendra virus, Nipah virus, and other paramyxoviruses, CCL3 likely contributes to early immune cell recruitment and coordination of antiviral inflammatory responses. Produced by activated macrophages, dendritic cells, and epithelial cells, CCL3 participates in cytokine and chemokine networks that regulate leukocyte trafficking and immune signaling during infection. Importantly, bats are known for their ability to mount antiviral immune responses while limiting excessive inflammation; therefore, regulation of chemokines such as CCL3 may contribute to balanced immune activation that controls viral replication without causing severe immunopathology. Characterization of Black Flying Fox Bat CCL3 supports research into bat antiviral immunity, host–pathogen interactions, and mechanisms of viral tolerance, providing insights relevant to zoonotic disease emergence and comparative mammalian immunology.
