Dolphin Interleukin-8 (IL-8), also known as CXCL8, is a pro-inflammatory chemokine that plays a central role in innate immune responses in dolphins, particularly the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), by promoting neutrophil chemotaxis, activation, and migration to sites of infection or tissue injury. Produced by macrophages, epithelial cells, and endothelial cells in response to microbial stimuli and inflammatory signaling, dolphin IL-8 likely signals through CXCR1- and CXCR2-like receptors to coordinate leukocyte recruitment and amplification of inflammatory responses. Elevated IL-8 expression has been associated with respiratory infections, bacterial and fungal dermatitis, wound healing, and systemic inflammatory conditions in both free-ranging and managed dolphin populations. Because dolphins are long-lived marine mammals exposed to diverse environmental stressors, including pollutants and harmful algal blooms, IL-8 serves as a valuable biomarker of immune activation and inflammatory status in marine health assessments.
