Guinea Pig CCL2 (C-C motif chemokine ligand 2, also known as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, MCP-1) is a pro-inflammatory chemokine that regulates recruitment and activation of monocytes, macrophages, and memory T cells during immune responses in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). CCL2 signals primarily through the CCR2 receptor, activating intracellular pathways that promote leukocyte migration, cytokine production, and coordination of innate and adaptive immune responses at sites of infection or tissue injury. In guinea pig health and research, CCL2 is particularly important in respiratory and infectious disease models, including tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis), where macrophage recruitment and granuloma formation are key components of disease pathogenesis. CCL2-mediated signaling contributes to the accumulation of monocytes and macrophages within infected lung tissue, influencing granuloma structure, immune containment of pathogens, and inflammatory damage. While CCL2-driven immune cell trafficking supports host defense, excessive or sustained expression can contribute to chronic inflammation and tissue pathology. Because guinea pigs are widely used as translational models for tuberculosis, respiratory infections, and inflammatory lung disease, characterization of guinea pig CCL2 supports studies of chemokine-mediated immune cell recruitment, host–pathogen interactions, and inflammatory mechanisms relevant to human infectious and inflammatory diseases.
