Turkey CCL5 (C–C motif chemokine ligand 5, also known as RANTES – Regulated upon Activation, Normal T cell Expressed and Secreted) is a proinflammatory chemokine that regulates immune cell recruitment and inflammatory responses in turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo). CCL5 belongs to the CC chemokine family, which includes related chemokines such as CCL3, CCL4, and CCL2, that coordinate leukocyte trafficking during immune activation. In turkeys, CCL5 is produced primarily by activated T lymphocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and epithelial cells in response to infection, inflammatory stimuli, or tissue injury. It exerts its biological effects mainly through interaction with chemokine receptors such as CCR1 and CCR5, promoting chemotaxis and activation of T cells, macrophages, and other leukocytes to sites of infection or inflammation. In turkey health, CCL5 contributes to immune responses against viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens, including economically important diseases such as avian influenza, turkey hemorrhagic enteritis virus, and bacterial respiratory infections, where chemokine-driven recruitment of immune cells is critical for pathogen control. Because turkeys are an important species in poultry production and avian immunology research, turkey CCL5 is studied in host–pathogen interaction studies, inflammatory response mechanisms, and vaccine development, helping to improve understanding of immune regulation and disease resistance in poultry.
