Egyptian Rousette Bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) CXCL15 (C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 15), also known in some species as lungkine, is a CXC chemokine involved primarily in mucosal immunity and neutrophil recruitment in the respiratory tract. CXCL15 belongs to the CXC chemokine family, which includes chemokines such as CXCL1, CXCL2, and CXCL8 (IL-8) that regulate neutrophil trafficking during inflammatory and innate immune responses. In Egyptian Rousette bats, CXCL15 is likely expressed predominantly by respiratory epithelial cells and other lung-associated tissues, where it contributes to local immune surveillance and recruitment of neutrophils to airway surfaces during infection or inflammation. Egyptian Rousette bats are natural reservoirs for Marburg virus, and chemokines such as CXCL15 may help coordinate early innate immune responses in the respiratory tract, facilitating immune cell recruitment while maintaining controlled inflammatory responses. Studying CXCL15 in this species supports research into bat respiratory immunity and host–pathogen interactions, helping to elucidate mechanisms that allow bats to tolerate viral infections with limited immunopathology, which is important for understanding zoonotic virus ecology and bat immune system adaptations.
