Jamaican fruit-eating bat IL-2 (Interleukin-2) is a key T cell–derived cytokine that regulates lymphocyte proliferation, differentiation, and immune homeostasis in the Jamaican fruit-eating bat (Artibeus jamaicensis). IL-2 is produced primarily by activated CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ T lymphocytes following antigen recognition and costimulatory signaling. It functions through the IL-2 receptor complex (IL-2Rα/CD25, IL-2Rβ, and the common γ chain) to promote clonal expansion of antigen-specific T cells, support development and maintenance of regulatory T cells (Tregs), and enhance natural killer (NK) cell activity. In healthy bats, basal IL-2 expression is typically low but increases rapidly upon immune activation during infection or inflammatory challenge. As A. jamaicensis is a reservoir species for several zoonotic pathogens, characterization of IL-2 responses is important for understanding how bats mount effective antiviral immunity while limiting immunopathology. Study of Jamaican fruit-eating bat IL-2 provides insight into adaptive immune regulation, T cell homeostasis, and the unique immune strategies that enable bats to tolerate viral infections.
