Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) Interferon-Gamma (IFN-γ) is a type II interferon produced primarily by activated T lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells, where it plays a central role in adaptive and cell-mediated immunity. IFN-γ signals through the IFN-γ receptor complex (IFNGR1/IFNGR2), activating JAK/STAT1 pathways and inducing expression of genes involved in antigen presentation, macrophage activation, and antiviral and antimicrobial defense. In A. jamaicensis, IFN-γ is of particular interest due to the species’ role in hosting and tolerating various viral pathogens while often exhibiting limited clinical disease, suggesting balanced Th1-type immune responses that promote pathogen control without excessive immunopathology. IFN-γ likely contributes to enhanced MHC class I and II expression, macrophage effector functions, and coordination of cytotoxic T-cell responses during infection. Characterization of Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat IFN-γ supports research into bat-specific immune regulation, host–pathogen interactions, and mechanisms of viral tolerance. Understanding IFN-γ dynamics in this species enhances its value in comparative immunology and emerging infectious disease research, particularly in defining how reservoir hosts modulate pro-inflammatory and antiviral responses differently from susceptible species.
