Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF) is a multifunctional cytokine belonging to the IL-6 family, which includes IL-6, IL-11, oncostatin M (OSM), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1), cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 (CLCF1), and IL-27; members of this family signal through receptor complexes containing the shared gp130 subunit. LIF binds to the LIF receptor (LIFR) in association with gp130, activating JAK/STAT3, MAPK, and PI3K signaling pathways that regulate cell survival, differentiation, immune modulation, and tissue repair. In A. jamaicensis, LIF is of particular interest due to the species’ ability to tolerate viral infections with limited clinical pathology, suggesting tightly regulated cytokine networks that balance inflammation and tissue regeneration. LIF may contribute to modulation of inflammatory responses, maintenance of epithelial and stem cell function, and regulation of immune cell differentiation during infection or tissue injury. Characterization of Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat LIF supports studies of bat-specific immune regulation, host–pathogen interactions, and mechanisms of viral tolerance and tissue resilience. Investigation of LIF signaling in this species enhances comparative immunology research and provides insight into conserved IL-6 family cytokine pathways relevant to inflammation, regenerative biology, and chronic disease in humans.
