Ferret CCL20 (C-C motif chemokine ligand 20, also known as MIP-3α, macrophage inflammatory protein-3 alpha, or LARC – liver and activation-regulated chemokine) is a pro-inflammatory chemokine that plays an important role in mucosal immunity and leukocyte recruitment in ferrets (Mustela putorius furo). CCL20 signals primarily through the CCR6 receptor, promoting chemotaxis of immune cells such as immature dendritic cells, memory T cells, and certain B cell populations to sites of epithelial infection or inflammation. In ferret health and research, CCL20 is particularly relevant in respiratory mucosal immune responses, including models of influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 infection, where epithelial cells in the airway produce CCL20 to recruit immune cells to infected lung tissue and initiate antiviral immune responses. CCL20-mediated signaling contributes to coordination of innate and adaptive immunity at mucosal surfaces but may also contribute to inflammatory lung pathology if excessively expressed. Because ferrets are widely used as translational models for human respiratory viral infections and mucosal immunity, characterization of ferret CCL20 supports studies of chemokine-driven immune cell trafficking, epithelial immune responses, and host–pathogen interactions relevant to human respiratory disease and vaccine development.
