Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) CCL4 (C-C motif chemokine ligand 4, also known as MIP-1β, macrophage inflammatory protein-1 beta) is a pro-inflammatory chemokine that regulates recruitment and activation of immune cells during antiviral and inflammatory responses. CCL4 primarily signals through the CCR5 receptor, promoting chemotaxis of monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and activated T lymphocytes to sites of infection or tissue injury. In A. jamaicensis, CCL4 is likely produced by activated macrophages, dendritic cells, epithelial cells, and lymphocytes following stimulation by pathogen-associated molecules and inflammatory cytokines. As bats serve as reservoirs for a variety of viruses, chemokines such as CCL4 are of particular interest for understanding how immune cell recruitment is regulated during viral infection while avoiding excessive inflammatory damage. Balanced expression of CCL4 may help coordinate antiviral immune responses and leukocyte trafficking while maintaining controlled inflammation, a feature associated with the ability of bats to tolerate infections that cause severe disease in other mammals. Characterization of Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat CCL4 therefore supports research into bat antiviral immunity, chemokine-mediated immune regulation, and host–pathogen interactions, providing insights into mechanisms of viral tolerance and comparative mammalian immunology.
