Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1Ra) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine that functions as a natural inhibitor of IL-1 signaling by competitively binding to the IL-1 receptor type 1 (IL-1R1) without inducing downstream signaling. By blocking the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1α and IL-1β, IL-1Ra plays a critical role in regulating innate immune responses and preventing excessive inflammation. In A. jamaicensis, a bat species known to host diverse viral pathogens with limited clinical disease, IL-1Ra is of particular interest for understanding how inflammatory responses are tightly controlled to balance pathogen clearance with reduced immunopathology. Controlled IL-1 signaling through elevated or well-regulated IL-1Ra expression may contribute to the species’ ability to tolerate viral infections while minimizing tissue damage. Characterization of Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat IL-1Ra supports research into inflammasome regulation, cytokine balance, and host tolerance mechanisms in reservoir species.
