  • The Bovine LIF (Leukemia Inhibitory Factor) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of LIF in cell culture supernatants from cattle and can also be used to measure LIF in a wide variety of biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, whole blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and tissue lysates from organs such as uterus, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes, supporting a broad range of reproductive, immunology, and translational research applications. LIF is a pleiotropic cytokine primarily produced by uterine epithelial cells, stromal cells, macrophages, and fibroblasts, and it plays a central role in regulating implantation, embryonic development, hematopoiesis, and immune responses. In the bovine model, LIF is widely studied in the context of reproductive biology, embryo implantation, inflammatory responses, and tissue regeneration, where its expression reflects cell signaling involved in development and immune regulation. Measurement of LIF provides valuable insight into reproductive health, immune regulation, and the efficacy of therapeutic interventions targeting fertility or inflammation. Reported measurements of bovine LIF have detected basal serum and plasma levels of approximately 10-200 pg/mL, with elevated levels-often 250-1,500 pg/mL-following reproductive stimulation, immune activation, or inflammatory challenge, and measurable expression has also been observed in tissue lysates from reproductive and immune organs. The kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant protein standard for assay development, and these antibodies have been validated to function together in an ELISA format using the provided standard. While the kit is optimized for cell culture supernatants, minor modifications to the protocol may be required when measuring LIF in other sample types to ensure optimal sensitivity and accuracy. Optimal buffers, antibody concentrations, incubation times, temperatures, and assay conditions have not been predetermined, allowing researchers to further adjust assay parameters based on their specific sample type and experimental requirements. The quantities of kit components are not matched, and individual components may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only and is manufactured in the USA.

  • Bovine Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF) is a multifunctional cytokine belonging to the IL-6 family-which includes IL-6, IL-11, oncostatin M (OSM), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1), cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 (CLCF1), and IL-27-all of which signal through receptor complexes containing the shared gp130 subunit. In cattle (Bos taurus), LIF binds to the LIF receptor (LIFR) in association with gp130, activating JAK/STAT3, MAPK, and PI3K signaling pathways that regulate cell survival, differentiation, immune modulation, and tissue repair. Bovine LIF plays important roles in reproductive biology, particularly in endometrial function, embryo implantation, and early embryonic development, making it highly relevant to fertility and reproductive management in dairy and beef production systems. LIF is also involved in hematopoiesis, neural cell survival, and modulation of inflammatory responses during infections such as mastitis and respiratory disease, where STAT3-driven signaling can influence tissue remodeling and immune regulation. Dysregulated LIF expression may contribute to fibrosis or tumor progression in certain contexts. As both a reproductive and immunomodulatory cytokine, bovine LIF is important in studies of fertility, embryo culture systems, stem cell biology, and cytokine network regulation. Characterization of bovine LIF supports veterinary research aimed at improving reproductive efficiency, understanding inflammatory disease mechanisms, and advancing regenerative and translational applications relevant to livestock and comparative medicine.
