  • The Dolphin IL-17A (Interleukin-17A) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of IL-17A in dolphin (e.g., Tursiops truncatus) cell culture supernatants and can also be used to measure IL-17A in additional biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, and tissue lysates, with minor protocol modifications recommended to optimize performance across different matrices. IL-17A is a pro-inflammatory cytokine primarily produced by Th17 cells, γδ T cells, and other innate lymphoid cell populations, where it plays a central role in host defense against extracellular bacteria and fungi by stimulating epithelial and stromal cells to produce chemokines, cytokines, and antimicrobial peptides, thereby promoting neutrophil recruitment to sites of infection. In healthy dolphins, circulating IL-17A levels are typically low or near the limit of detection, but concentrations may increase during bacterial or fungal infections, inflammatory airway disease, skin lesions, environmental stress-associated immune activation, or experimental immune stimulation, depending on health status and timing of sampling. In marine mammal and comparative immunology research, dolphin IL-17A serves as an important biomarker of mucosal immune activation, Th17-type immune polarization, inflammatory responses, and host-pathogen interactions in both free-ranging and managed populations. The ELISA kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant dolphin IL-17A protein standard validated for use together in an ELISA format; kit components are not supplied in matched quantities and may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only, not for use in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, and is manufactured in the USA.

Dolphin IL-17A (Interleukin-17A) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine belonging to the IL-17 family that plays a role in host defense and inflammatory responses in dolphins (e.g., Tursiops truncatus). IL-17A is produced primarily by Th17-like CD4⁺ T cells, as well as by γδ T cells and other innate lymphoid cell populations, in response to microbial infection and immune stimulation. It acts on epithelial, endothelial, and stromal cells to induce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and antimicrobial peptides, thereby promoting neutrophil recruitment and enhancing mucosal and barrier immunity in respiratory, gastrointestinal, and dermal tissues. In healthy dolphins, basal IL-17A expression is expected to be low, but levels may increase during bacterial or fungal infections, parasitic infestations, skin lesions, respiratory disease, or systemic inflammatory responses. In marine mammal and comparative immunology research, dolphin IL-17A is of interest for understanding Th17-mediated immunity, host responses to environmental stressors and pathogens, and the balance between protective inflammation and tissue damage in free-ranging and managed populations.
