  • The IGF-1 (Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1) ELISA is designed for the quantitative measurement of IGF-1 in cell culture supernatants from the target species and can also be used to measure IGF-1 in a variety of biological sample types reported in the literature, including serum, plasma, whole blood, and tissue lysates from organs such as liver, muscle, and kidney. While the kit is optimized for cell culture supernatants, minor modifications to the protocol may be required when measuring IGF-1 in other sample types to ensure optimal sensitivity and accuracy, allowing researchers to adjust buffers, antibody concentrations, incubation times, temperatures, and other assay conditions as needed. IGF-1 is a peptide hormone primarily produced by hepatocytes and other tissue-specific cells and plays a central role in growth, metabolism, tissue repair, and anabolic signaling. IGF-1 is completely conserved across more than 100 species, making this assay broadly applicable for comparative studies in multiple animal models and translational research. In the animal model of interest, IGF-1 is widely studied in the context of growth regulation, developmental biology, metabolic studies, endocrine research, and tissue regeneration, where its expression reflects systemic and local anabolic activity. Measurement of IGF-1 provides valuable insight into growth hormone signaling, metabolic regulation, tissue repair, and the efficacy of therapeutic or nutritional interventions, with reported levels typically detected at low to mid nanogram-per-milliliter concentrations under basal conditions and increasing under growth stimulation, exercise, or regenerative processes, depending on sample type and experimental context. The kit contains a capture antibody, detection antibody, and recombinant IGF-1 protein standard for assay development, and these antibodies have been validated to function together in an ELISA format using the provided standard. The quantities of kit components are not matched, and individual components may be purchased separately. This product is for research use only and is manufactured in the USA.

Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) is a highly conserved peptide growth factor that plays a central role in regulating growth, development, tissue maintenance, and metabolic processes in mammals including cattle (Bos taurus), dog (Canis lupus familiaris), dolphin (Delphinidae spp.), goat (Capra hircus), guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), horse (Equus caballus), cat (Felis catus), human (Homo sapiens), mink (Neogale vison), monkey (nonhuman primates), ferret (Mustela putorius furo), pig (Sus scrofa), and bat (order Chiroptera). The IGF-1 protein is identical at the amino acid level among these species, reflecting strong evolutionary conservation and essential biological functions. IGF-1 is produced primarily in the liver in response to growth hormone stimulation and circulates in the bloodstream bound to IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), which regulate its stability, transport, and tissue availability. It is also produced locally in many tissues, including muscle, bone, adipose tissue, and the nervous system, where it acts in autocrine and paracrine signaling. IGF-1 binds to the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R), a transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptor, activating intracellular signaling pathways such as PI3K–AKT and MAPK that regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, and metabolism. Functionally, IGF-1 promotes somatic growth by stimulating skeletal development, chondrocyte proliferation in growth plates, and bone formation, while also enhancing muscle protein synthesis and inhibiting apoptosis in multiple cell types. In addition to its growth-promoting effects, IGF-1 contributes to tissue repair, neuroprotection, immune regulation, and metabolic homeostasis, including modulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. Due to its broad biological roles and cross-species conservation, IGF-1 is widely studied as a key endocrine and paracrine regulator in developmental biology, veterinary science, aging research, and translational biomedical studies.
